Smeatons Tower
9 miles off Plymouth
The Eddystone Lighthouse stands
Fourth in line of these beacons
Warning of reefs The Mariners understand
In 1700Winstanley’s Lighthouse
Was washed away in a storm
The second was Rudyards Lighthouse
Hoping longer to perform
But in December 1755
This one was consumed by fire
But considering it was surrounded by Sea
The water couldn’t reach 70 feet higher
A third lighthouse was then to be built
I t was built by John Smeaton
On recommendation of Lord Macclesfield
Creating the building in stone this time
Using a foundation suitable on which to build
In 1882 the lighthouse was de-commissioned
An Trinity House said transfer it to the shore
Where it stands as a Tourist attraction
And a Memorial to John Smeaton evermore
