Sadly given a raw deal due to prejudice against blacks.
A poem written by one of them.
The rest have gone home, To meet the blizzard's wintry blast. The Ninth, the willing Ninth, Is camped here till the last, We were the first to come, Will be the last to leave. Why are we compelled to stay, Why this reward receive? In warm barracks, Our recent comrades take their ease, While we poor devils, And the Sioux, are left to freeze.
I retired from the 1st Battalion 9th Cavalry and the 9th Cavalry was one of the three Battalions known as Buffalo Soldiers. Not to be confessed with the 9th Infantry, known as the Manchu's from the Chinese Manchu Revolt, But they do dispute on who gets certain battle streamers. The 9th Cavalry under Teddy Roosevelt went to Cuba but their horse were taken away in Cuba and made them the 9th Infantry so the Battle of San Juan Hill is claimed by both battalion of 9th Cav. and 9th Inf. The 9th Cav is under the 1st Cavalry Division and the 9th Infantry is under the 3rd Infantry Division. Just a short History note.
FYI, the 7th Cav is part of the 1st Cavalry Division with their history of the Little Big Horn, under the command of Custer.
