As red meat- along with any other cuts of meat- is a food made up of only fat and protein, eating red meat will have no immediate effect on blood sugar.

The problem with my weight loss is that 20 of the 40 lbs went in 5 days-- consequence of gastric surgery. It took 5.5 months before I could eat a “normal” meal at one setting.

Mentioning the gastric surgery in OP would have been helpful information.

Of course you will lose weight fast in the beginning after such surgery and of course you will eat smaller meals long term, that is the whole point of surgery is it not?

Presuming you had it done for weight loss reasons and not a partial gastrectomy for cancer or suchlike?
Surely dietican support is part of your follow up plan? .

I was wondering too if the OP has undergone Bariatric surgery.

Dietary advice on the internet is focused on not gaming weight. At age 80, I have a different problem, and I suspect that so do a lot of the elderly-- loosing weight, not gaining weight.

I have been loosing weight for more than a decade, 50lbs so far. In the last year, 4 different MDs told me, “Don’t lose any more weight.’”. So to boost my weight. I went on a binge of eating high animal fat foods and stuff with sugar, which raised my blood sugar level from a good 97 to a bad 107. I cut back on dairy and beef, which brought blood sugar down to 94, but left a calorie deficit for maintaining or gaining weigh. You got any ideas?

Have to admit it has been difficult to lose what little weight I have lost over the last couple of years. As a diabetic I have to avoid carbohydrates as much as I can, but I mainly concentrate on my portion sizes, which has given me the most success, so far. Have a lot more weight to lose, but do not get upset if I have a few weeks of no weight change.

A binge diet won’t do you any good at all! a sensible, healthy diet should help you to maintain a healthy weight.
You had surgery previously I understand, bariatric surgery?
Didn’t you get referred to a dietitian after the surgery to help you with an eating plan.

There are at least 4 different types of fat. Most don’t affect blood sugar, but saturated (meat & dairy) fat does. My blood sugar dropped from 107 to 94 when I cut way back on eating beef and cheese.

Some semantic clarification: Gastric surgery is done on the GI track. Some gastric surgery is done on the stomach force weight loss. That’s not what I had. I had section of my colon removed that had been killed by a hernia inside a hernia.

Sandgrounder:

Portion size works, but it is a rather crude method, focusing on quantity while there is also a quality consideration-- what you eat matters as much or more than how much you eat. Look into the Glycemic Index for carbs. For low calorie protein, seafood, ham, and skinless chicken. Especially seafood.

Complex carbs from Whole Foods are good

Processed carbs are not
