What is this "Thing" called "Middle class ? Why this desire to distance themselves from the so called "Working class? Do they not engage in activity that gives them an income ? isn,t that "Work"? Or is it, perhaps, that they .somehow feel "Superior" to the so called "Working class"! Answers on a postcard please!...

Social grade is a classification system based on occupation.

I didn’t think anyone actually uses those terms any more....do they?
Happy to help.

I am aware of the terms, professional, and white and blue collar workers being used, but not heard middle or working class being used these days.
Happy to help.

I think it is a class separation used for a number of years but hopefully now it is something we can overcome and forget.
To me it is wrong to have classes as we all know there is tramps on the street with more morals and honesty than some millionaires but we were led to believe the richer people got the better person they became which we know is poppycock.
I refuse to accept class and see everyone on the same level when I first meet them.
Middle class was a level people tried to push to as to say I am better than the average person, The series the Good Life brings it home to see, played by fantastic actors and actresses Penelope Keith was amazing in that series.

Well the terms 'middle class' and 'working class' may no longer be used , or spoken, but still exists in our minds.
I dislike 'labels' that are applied to human beings, dislike the class system even more.

There has always been a yawning difference between the working-class and the 'upper class' (aristocracy).
But the so called 'middle class', are still 'working class' who have acquired certain qualifications to do a more skilled profession, and anyone can achieve this if they want to.
So 'middle class' means nothing to me.

Let's scrap the issue of 'class' anyway.

As long as there are social inequalities and differences, there will be different social strata and different ways of modelling them. It's about the promise of gaining more income, status, power that appeals to many people.
Over here, the word "class" is to be avoided wherever possible and working class is no longer used at all. In an inclusive society almost everybody is thought to be middle class or a high achiever with the exception of those who have been on social welfare for a long time.

I see those two examples of having little or nothing to do with each other.

Working class is 95% of the people. And the other 5% are the ones that go "my bentley has a100 Miles on, tell James to pickup a new one. Let's do breakfast in London, lunch in Paris and dinner in rome.

Ball park figures, nothing set in stone. And not judging the persons worth on their income because everyone is different. Seen people in the bottom class jump all the way up to the upper class and the other way around, from the uppers class all the way down to lower class.

My guess somewhere around these figures for individuals and families.

Lower class are the ones humming and bumming
Lower middle class make $12000 $24000 a year
Lower upper class $24000 to $36000
Lower middle class $36000 to $50000
Middle class $50000 to $130000
Upper middle class $1300000 to $150000
Lower upper class $150000 to $500000
Middle upper class $500000 to $1000000
Upper class $1000000 and up.

I don't think that the class thing, (working, middle. upper) was thought up by the masses.
It is just labels that were thought of by the media
