A couple of days ago Lord Singh wrote an article in the Daily Mail on Sunday, explaining why he'd stepped down from participating in "Thought for the day".

Depressingly familiar tale unfortunately.

But I can no longer accept prejudiced and intolerant attempts by the BBC to silence Sikh teachings on tolerance, freedom of belief and on the duty we all must share to build a more cohesive and responsible society.

Yes, Hyper sensitive PC at work once again: " I am leaving Thought For The Day with great reluctance."

BBC told to me that discussing this historical episode – which involved a bigoted Muslim ruler more than 300 years ago – might inexplicably upset some Muslims now. I was appalled
.
The script had already been agreed with her colleagues when the senior producer arbitrarily, and without discussion, declared she would not allow it to be broadcast, even though it contained no criticism of Islam whatsoever.

It was like saying to a Christian that he should not talk about Easter for fear of giving offence to the Jews and others living at the time. It was quite ludicrous hypersensitivity to possible criticism. When I questioned her and pointed out that we were discussing a central event in Sikh history, I was told I that had spoken about the Guru’s martyrdom before! By the same nonsensical logic, we should stay silent about the stories of Easter and Christmas, because we’ve already discussed them in the years gone by.

I think we all know how the land lies at the BBC regarding all things Islamic and this sorry tale doesn't surprise me at all. I no longer watch BBC news or most of their programmes and wouldn't be the slightest bit bothered if it folded tomorrow - in fact I wish it would because it's a shadow of its former self.

I'm still a fan of the BBC you won't be surprised to hear, but I do accept "sensitivities" as described by Lord Singh appear to be an issue, whatever the cause (it fits in a similar category to universities being reluctant to allow speakers who might offend someone having a platform, and Germaine Greer got caught up in such policies).

Why can't the BBC just report news, rather than try and make the news or become the object of the news?
BBC in my opinion, needs to be broken up into a number of " independent" broadcasters..drama...entertainment...news etc so as to get away from institutional correctness and propaganda.

I appreciate the thoughtful reasons why the BBC decision was a bad one - the PC rants, not so much.

Everyone treads very carefully where Islam is concerned. I wonder why?

Mmmm, bit controversial there.

All "Abrahamic faiths", don't forget, and Lord Singh was trying to build bridges with other faiths wasn't he,.....what are you trying to do?

This kind of stupidity is one of the reasons why I no longer own a television.

I used to enjoy watching programmes for their entertainment and educational values. I will not, however, be brain washed into someone else's idea of what is/is not politically correct. While I still have a working brain I will think for myself!
