This four hundred year old tradition is so dangerous, with fourteen injured already this year, that authorities should consider making this event illegal. Further, a bull fight ends the festival and matadors kill the bull—barbaric.

The bullfight - agree.
Running - not so much.

People try to show their 'bravery' by tormenting the bulls when they are running. I really don't know how in this day and age anyone can claim it is okay to use animals for entertainment this way. The bulls are terrified. All of the energy/ time/ expense that goes into the Running of the Bulls Festival could easily be put into an event where HELPING animals is encouraged and celebrated. Let animals be. They are not playthings. They have feelings and feel terror and pain just as we do.

The trouble is, it attracts a lot of tourists, including the British. It will never be abolished while there are sadists who will pay to watch animals suffer.

I would like to see bull running and bull fighting end completely.
I don't have much sympathy for the humans injured in this event - they have freely chosen to attend or take part - thus supporting a barbaric practice of animal cruelty.
If humans chose not to attend these bull runs and bull fights, the practice would die out.
The unfortunate bulls do not have a choice - they are the victims here.

How anyone can watch the bulls being scared out of their wits during that short but traumatic run into the bull ring, to be tortured, mutilated and slaughtered, and view it as "entertainment" is beyond my comprehension.

The display by the apparently brave matador is all a con trick. Many vile things are done to the bull beforehand to disorientate it and weaken it so it is easier to injure and kill and is less of a threat. Wet newspaper may be thrust into its ears and Vaseline rubbed into its eyes. It can be kept in a dark space for days so that when it is let out it rushes into the light and cannot see. Some of the other things they do to the bull beforehand are so awful I don't want to even type them. It is all designed to make the bull appear lively but it is actually nothing like as dangerous as a normal bull would be which hadn't been tormented and abused for days.

I've often wondered how the EU can dictate the shape of bananas but let member countries carry on like this with so much deliberate animal abuse. My own country, Ireland allows hare coursing which is equally barbaric. I believe Ireland should be told to ban that too.

They say you can judge a society by the way it treats its most vulnerable members. I think it's bad for people to get their kicks form something like this.It encourages casual and thoughtless cruelty - an attitude which may well extend to the treatment of other people.

It's a sad reflection on human nature that so many get pleasure from this sort of thing. No country can regard itself as civilised while it allows any form of animal cruelty, whether in the slaughter-house, race-course or in private.
