For some reason the Conservatives are determined to have everyone owning their own home. Not only is building new 'affordable' houses the main agenda, but they have brought back the 'right to buy' policy for renters. It makes things very difficult for people who cannot really afford to take on a mortgage, and for those who are not ready to settle in one place and need to rent. I'm puzzled by the reason behind it. Why are they so against renting?

'An Englishmans home is his castle', Rosie. It's called aspiration.

The Conservative Party traditionally draws its support from home owners. That is one of the reasons why Mrs Thatcher sold off council houses. Many people these days cannot afford to buy a home. If this persists the Tory vote may dwindle.

The opinion that only home owners support Tory values and vote for them is way of mark and very short sighted.
The housing stock Maggie's government sold off was being paid for by the residents over and over again. It gave them aspiration to be 'property owner', who wouldn't want that.
The rent they had paid would be taken into account. Now those houses are being sold in my area for considerable amount.

Yes, Rips, that is another reason the council housing stock was sold off by Mrs Thatcher. Much of it was in need of costly updating.

However, I also believe that the English have a house owning mindset unlike people on the continent. Here, though, it is difficult to find companies willing to invest in good quality rented accommodation. ( so I am told ).

I've just recently had the plasterer in, then the bathroom fitters, next week the joiner will be in replacing doors, followed by the decorator : right now I'd swap this money-pit of an Englishman's castle for a nice rented apartment in a town. That's if there were any to be had.

I believe it is the same in the rest of the UK too Aida.

I do agree with what Polliyana said that those who bought their council ( and let me add, housing association ) houses had already contributed in rental payments and their discounts were based on these payments.
Maybe it could be a good way today to help people to get started on the first steps into owning their own homes - built in rights to buy. After all we do have part buy - part rent schemes already in place. I think once people have paid rents for a certain length of time they should have favourable options to convert to buying.

Granted it will be a disincentive for buy-to-let peeps.

The reason for selling these houses off now is so they have something to sell to pay for any NHS service needed by it's Occupant ....if left to the Tories you won't be leaving your house to your kids ....B) B)
