Great Gramps helped rescue 45 Japanese sailors in January of 1935 from the Hokuman Maru. Latitude was 49:52, longitude was 129:54. He was on the Mail Liner President Jackson. He got a bronze metal and $100 from The Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York. On the back, “Vita Felicibus Ausis Servata.” Good job Gramps. Gangster.

Woody, you should be incredibly proud of your Great Gramps.

I couldn’t carry the underpants of most of my deceased relatives. Today we complain about refugees and etc etc. They risked everything to save people they never knew nor ever saw again. I’m positive he didn’t accept that $100 though, unless he bought some vodka. Lol.

I’m getting a lot of family history things sent to me from Mom. She wants these things passed down and evidently I’m the guy. Pops calls them all “Squareheads” but I’m not sure you’re supposed to say that anymore, even if you’re Finnish.

Ironic that a few years after this event these two sides were killing one another at sea. Humans are complex eh?
