I heard today on my local radio that restaurants are thinking of
Asking for a deposit when booking a meal !
What do you think of this idea then ?
Would you be prepared to do this ?

I have had to pay a deposit in the past at a restaurant, but that was for a Christmas meal.

I don't think it's unreasonable if the restaurants in question have had people book a table then don't turn up, leaving empty tables that could have been filled.

I think it is perefctly reasonable, to expect a deposit when booking a table in a restaraunt. How else could they protect their trade, if a table is reserved and no one shows up. It is inconsiderate to book and not show. Its all about faith and consideration for others, which seems to decline in many spheres.

The Pandemic has changed the world we live in. A reservation is a commitment to the business and should be honored unless there are extraordinary circumstances , and then the business should be notified. It is natural for a business to want to protect itself.

Many pubs are now requiring a deposit to secure a two hour slot for a drink due to the amount of " no shows" when they were taking it on trust that people would either turn up or have the decency to cancel.

A few spoil things for the many.

A perfect martini should be made by filling a glass with gin, then waving it in the general direction of Italy.

Yes certainly a Deposit. With dining 'Outside' being C19 recommended.
Otherwise a Dine and Dash merchants Paradise.
Which near bankrupt hospitality venues can least afford.

Depends on the terms and conditions applied by the restaurant as to when a deposit can be refunded. Otherwise it makes perfect sense.

Fine by me if they wanted a deposit. Empty booked tables are losing them money.

I'd heard on the radio the other day, many restaurants were having lots of bookings but people not turning up and that's not fair on them. They've already been hit hard with the pandemic and for people to do this is very unreasonable. Of course there are some who, for emergency reasons, may not be able to fulfil the booking but by and large, most of the restaurants who were talking part in the programme had multiple bookings not turning up.

In normal pre-covid times, if someone did not turn up to a restaurant for the booking, it wasn't too bad for the restaurant to fill the table from someone walking in off the street. Have done that a lot myself over the years and have for the most been able to get a table. These days as you cannot do that at the moment, then the Restaurant is going to lose custom if you do not turn up and income. So I think they should, till we finally get back to normal .
