Bought a live crab yesterday followed the instructions to kill it humanely , it didn't die . Was told to put it in the freezer for 30 mins did that then put it in boiling salted water . It woke up and started writhing. I will never forget this experience it is upsetting me because I am guilty of murdering a crab.. now I'm thinking about how all animals we eat , die . Couldn't eat the crab BTW

I have never tried to kill a live crab, nor have I ever tried to eat a crab - the thought is repugnant to me.

However, from what I have seen and read about it, I think you missed out an important step in the killing of the crab.
After chilling the crab to a temperature cool enough to induce a state of torpor, I thought one was supposed to physically sever the crab’s main nervous system, so it will not feel any more pain, before boiling it.
I am not sure how or where the cut should be made but I think there are instruction videos available.

I have to admit that I find the whole idea of boiling a crab to kill it revolting, a pity they can't have a knock on the head like any other fish.

I have just been looking at these ‘humane’ ways of killing a crab, incidentally I have never killed one myself.

But after reading these methods........I will pass on the crab altogether.:S

No I couldn't even contemplate doing that ... I am very squeamish generally.

I think if I ever acquired a live crab I would have to take it to the seaside and set it free.

You have discovered something about yourself jennilin and the experience has made you think about animal welfare ... that is a good thing smile.png

Not me I wouldn't buy anything alive to kill myself which might be hypocritical seeing as I eat meat.

I have killed many crabs and Prawns also.
Just put them in a pot of fresh water(To make them spew) and bring to the boil.
Mack sure to put lid on pot as crabs climb out when getting hot.
They seem to get a bit irate.
Mud crabs have extra large claws and can do a lot of damage.
Make sure you tie them up first.
For the squirmish Have you ever witnessed a pig being killed
They put a hook through it's ankle, Hang on a rack, Cut it's throat and watch it scream and kick till it bleeds to death.
