Summer is here in the UK and its nice not to have to cook hot meals all the time. My fridge is full of salad stuff and I'm feeling very smug with all this healthy eating. ;)

The trouble is, that a couple of hours after having a meal of salad & cold meat......I find myself craving a take away chinese/indian or fish and chips! :( :(

Does anyone else have this problem?

Salad on its own can only be classed as a quick snack. Vegetables are digested quickly so they don't stay in your stomach for long. Adding a baked potato and a slice of quiche turns it into a proper meal.

It depends on the composition of the salad. A chef salad with components such as meat and eggs can be quite filling, whereas more Spartan salads are basically rabbit food. I tend to eat salads as appetizers or side dishes rather than as my mainstay...

When I make a salad I try and put as much variety as possible on the plate. This includes hard boiled egg, cold new potatoes, ham or tuna or tinned salmon (if I am feeling flush ;) ) , cheese, beetroot, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, sometimes I even add cold broad beans.

My plate of salad is full to overflowing....but a couple of hours later and I am craving a take away.

I know what you mean Janquine ... I often add a breast of chicken to my salads....and can still feel ‘peck’ish’ a couple of hours later .... I might have fruit and a little cheese at that point :)

I get the pre packed salads from Morrisons for either £1 or £2, usually the Mediteranian one. Hard boiled egg, more grated carrot & a spot of salad cream. Cooked meat or a piece of crumbly Cheshire cheese with Branston pickle. No bread. Fills me up ok. I will have a small bowl of ice cream a couple of hours later. [Morrisons double chocolate is nice as well as peach & raspberry] Some tinned fruit & a banana cut up in it takes the sweet tooth away for me.

Salads without added protein leave me hungry 2 hours later.
I am dieting at the moment and have just had salad with a chicken leg.

I always have new potatoes or baked with my salads or I'm starving a few hours later - you have to have some carbs to beef it up.
