TOPIC: South Pacific

South Pacific 1 year, 10 months ago #25729

Yesterday they showed South Pacific on the telly, with Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi
and I really enjoyed listening to the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. The colour was a bit odd mind, but considering it was a 1958 film, it was to be expected. A great old film I thought.

South Pacific, Oklahoma, Carousel - all films that my Mum loved and so do I. I recently bought them for £4 each in Morrisons - what a bargain!

The colour was deliberately altered on that film.

Haha, I remember when in every movie's opening credits it always said "presented in technicolor" as though it was so huge and important....Kind of was the HD of the time, although watching those old movies makes me really miss how those classic films looked and felt on the big screen.

Technicolour was new then!! I saw 'South Pacific' when it was first released. A truly great film, with wonderful songs. The 'special effects' colour was used to enhance the location. Its never lost its appeal for me.

I used to see all those old musicals when I was a kid. When I was a teenager I told everyone that they were stupid and boring - I told myself too - until I sat and watched a few like South Pacific and Oklahoma, 7 Brides etc.
In my twenties I saw Paint your Wagon on TV and loved it so now, in my late fifties and a bit deaf musicals are the one form of entertainment I can thoroughly enjoy because the words aren't that important the music is!
