OK, Christmas is not the same as when we were kids in the very distant past, I am not a religious person but to me Christmas is special, when I see the excitement on my girls faces when they were young and now with my four grandkids is such a pleasure.

I spend a day decorating the tree, it's all mine and no one is allowed to interfere, the child in me!
I climb onto our building extension [flat roof] outside the kids bedroom ringing sleigh bells, the child in me!

I tell the kids I am going out and sneak upstairs and roll apples, oranges and nuts down the stairs, you want a wow factor, try it!! Father Christmas has visited our house and let us known he has been!

I cook Christmas dinner that takes me an age, but the look on my families face and the mmmm, oh that's stunning, I am stuffed, is such a pleasure.

One doesn't have to spend a fortune at Christmas, it is the pleasure shown, my mother-in-law always buys me socks and pants (underwear) I have tons of them, it's the thought that counts.

A poem I wrote some years ago I used to read to my daughters just before they went to bed and now read to my grandsons

THE WONDER OF CHRISTMAS

Fairy lights twinkle shining bright
Windows lit up on cold winter’s night
It’s here at last Christmas Eve
I hope in Santa you do believe

Your stocking hung on the fireplace
Such excitement on your face
Singing loudly as you go to bed
There to lay your sleepy head

Dreaming of what Santa may bring
From outside hear sleigh bells ring
Over rooftops through starlit skies
You may just see him through sleepy eyes

Reindeers pulling Santa’s sleigh
A wondrous time it’s Christmas day
To your home Santa, will call
Bearing gifts for you and all

On Christmas day as you awake
So excited you start to shake
Santa’s been you shout with joy
Seeing before you a brand new toy

I lived in Finland for over 2 years, and went to see the land of Father Christmas, I met the helper elves who gave me a special present, as a gift for believing in Christmas. Now how can you deny there is no spirit at Christmas, I have the proof!!!!! and each time they are touched Father Christmas knows who touches them, my grandsons feel the spirit of Christmas when they touch the boots, now that is what Christmas is all about........Innocence

Our eldest girl worked out for herself that Santa didn't exist when she was three. Fortunately it didn't stop her enjoying opening her stocking in the early hours of Christmas morning. At 43 she would still have a stocking now, I reckon!

I just can't wait for it to be over, it's a lot of hype and getting less and less Christian by the year

Awesome-your kids were lucky, and I hope your wife had her own traditions. I love everything about Christmas and because I announced to my family no more gift giving several years ago I no longer get depressed by the whole shopping thing. I have promised myself if these miserable apartment people finish with me before Christmas I am going to go all out decorating while playing carols with the fireplace cd (some are hokey this one is ultra realistic) playing on the tv. Then I am simply going to sit quietly with the lights out tree lights on and enjoy the ambience.

I miss loving Christmas, as I had done for so many years.
Wonderful ones, when children/grand children were young.
Big real four foot tree, and presents underneath.
A lot of thought put into buying, and then wrapping.

The song goes 'Those were the days, my friend, I thought they'd never end, but they did.

It's all different now, although I'm lucky to have caring family, I go to every year, but now I think how soon can I say " think I'll go home ", and back to my 'own corner'.

I'm not grousing, as I think how lucky I am, when I see what is happening in our world.

The best part for me now is my church, Christmas Eve service, and the singing of all the beautiful carols, especially 'Silent Night '.

Yes, Christmas is very commercialised nowadays compared to when I was a child but I still get as excited in the lead-up to the day as I have always done. From the early days of who is first in the neighbourhood to put their lights and Christmas trees up to looking at the beautiful coloured lights in the dark during most of December as I gaze out of the train window on the way home from work. The front room transformed, the planning, the gift choosing and wrapping, writing and sending cards. the visits from family, the annual pre-Christmas family get together at our local restaurant. I find it quite sad when Boxing day has been and gone and even more so after New Year's day is over and the tree is starting to shed it's needles. But.... whilst it is here I absolutely love it. I always will. :)
