I see today that the government has released previously classified documents relating to UFO's. What is everyones opinion on the phenomina of UFO's. I read a book by Eric-von-Daniken many years ago and can see some sense in what he was trying to say. Roswell is a good example, plus many other sightings in many countries and by seasoned pilots with many years flying experience. I must say I do believe ther must be something out there in the vastness of space. May be a good debate?

Without meaning to sound rude bobo, we've "done" this topic at least once before and the opinions vary wildly.
I personally believe that there is something "out there" but its origins are a bit of a mystery. Our local BBC put on a little news story last night about the release of the data recently and, as usual, it was done in a jokey fashion.
This has been the case for many, many years and stems from governments trying to make light of the possibility. In the US they have this down to an art form but the thousands of incidents around the world cannot all be explained away by atmospherics, weather balloons, ball-lightening, Venus, or any of the other explanation habitually pushed onto the public.
Ancient peoples recorded incidents too - sometimes with strange depictions on artefacts or tombs. There are also the strange remains found in parts of North and South America, the Middle East and other places around the world of an advanced people that were all over six feet tall with elongated skulls and used a language completely and utterly different to to anything ever found anywhere else, except on ancient Egyption tombs, ancient South American sites and, again, on isolated places around the world.
Ancient Greek and Minoan myths speak of these people as do Sumerians and Phoenicians.
Imagination is a wonderful thing but how come these people all thought-up the same thing? stevmk2

Daniken's books were discredited many years ago....if I remember correctly, it was Isaac Asimov who "ripped" apart the so called scientific "observations".

Just because we don't see 'them', doesn't mean that 'they' aren't there.

Just because something has not happened does not mean it never will. We have not a clue about what is going on up there.

No offence taken, and I was unaware that this subject had been brought up previously due to the fact that I a resonably new to Buzz 50. However, I believe this planet has been visited many times over the centuries, one of the most amazing sights is that which the Nasca Indians did by depecting animals that could only be seen from the sky, why was this? Stonehenge, now there's another strange one. How has technology progressed so quick over the past half century? whereas, the human race has been around for many, many centuries. I have myself, along with five other friends seen UFO's and as the term means Unidentified Flying Objects, I do not know what we saw, it could have been terrestial or non-terrestrial, I only know we witnessed something that did not appear to be from this planet, as we had never seen anything like it before or since. I cannot see how so many credible eye witness accounts can all be wrong? My apologies for bringing up this subject again, but due to recent events of the release of once top secret documents by the government, just thought it may provoke some thought

The Palace one was probably the clearest, being an extremely large UFO performing aerial manouevres that no known aircraft could possible do then, or even now for that matter. It was completely ignored by national press etc. although local papers did report it, with a photograph.
No explanation ever came from any official sources that I saw then, despite the eye-witnesses numbering in hundreds, including police.
When we last had a discussion on this topic people said visitors from other worlds would have been picked-up by the massive range of sensory equipment around thew earth, some government controlled, some in private hands and that could not possibly have been suppressed completely by anyone but who's to say that visitors had the technology to mask themselves from everything that we have?
My own personal view is that there are no visitors as such because they are possibly already here. There are still so many places on earth where a highly advanced society could quite easily hide from homo sapiens, the oceans being one major example with the ice caps being another; these places are very sparcely explored by man and the logistics in getting there are still in their infancy.
I saw a strange almost circular craft from a helicopter in 1974. I was going out to a platform offshore in a Bell helicopter with ten other people plus the pilot and we all saw this thing disappear into the sea - then it came up again miles behind us yet the radar showed nothing and land-based defence systems also only picked up us - I'd like to see someone explain that but the pilot refused to report it for fear of being branded a nutter!stevmk2

They may be out there, but they are so far away we'll never see them and probably won't even hear from them until they are long gone.

I used to be the biggest skeptic often dismissing things talked about as folks not having anything better to do or just plain insanity...but experience makes you a quick believer.. A place I never wanted to be in! so folks do not dismiss the unknown to folklore or mass hysteria... our universe is just a grain of sand in the beach of space to think we are the only inhabitants is just plain selfish.
